The original Broadway production of The Lion King featured an array of spectacular effects. EffectDesign's Geoff Puckett collaborated with director Julie Taymor to envision and produce the show's projection effects.
Merging the patterns of ancient Africa with cutting-edge projection technology, Puckett brought to life more than a dozen visual creations to reinforce costumed actors and their emotional story. With a budget of $368,000 the visual effects were produced in eight months. This included design mockups in California and several trips to New York to work out implementation at the New Amsterdam theater.
The Lion King opened in 1997 to critical acclaim, winning six TonyŽ Awards (including best lighting) and now plays in New York, Hamburg, Tokyo, Nagoya, The Netherlands, Sydney and London
